Cancer treatment
Effective cancer treatment begins with:
1. Early detection of abnormalities under the concept of “prevention is better than cure”
through routine health check-up and cancer screening. This allows for the timely detection of diseases for treatment, particularly in patients who are at a high risk of developing cancer, such as those who have a family history of the disease or who have a genetically transmitted cancer, such as pancreatic, ovarian, colon, or breast cancer.
Examples of cancer screening include:
- Breast cancer screening with digital mammography and breast ultrasound
- Lung cancer screening with chest X-ray or low-dose CT scan
- Cervical cancer screening with PapSmear, HPV DNA test
- Colon cancer screening with colonoscopy and CEA test
- Prostate cancer screening with PSA test
- Liver cancer screening with AFP test and upper abdominal ultrasound
2. Biopsy for early investigations of abnormalities include:
- Tissue biopsy for results
- Examination for disease staging, such as CT Scan, MRI.
3. Early treatment:
Patients with cancer shouldn’t have to wait a long time for care. Waiting periods influence both the disease’s complete remission and recurrence. Patients should therefore undergo treatment in a timely manner, such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery.
4. Close monitoring:
Close monitoring not only aids in the management of adverse effects but also expedites the detection of disease recurrence. To maximize the chance of complete remission in the event of a recurrence, treatment should be initiated immediately.
